Abstract
Researchers and public health officials have faced challenges for forecasting the impact of emerging or reemerging infectious disease on morbidity and mortality. Mathematical modeling has made significant contributions to understanding the spread of infectious diseases, and also providing useful insights to control or reduce the disease burden. In this talk,we review some basic mathematical models ininfectious diseases from a simple SIR (susceptible-infectious-recovered) model to more complex models with applications to pandemic influenza, MERS-CoV, and dengue outbreaks. Furthermore,optimal control problems are formulated to identify and evaluate optimal strategies at aminimalcost.
